The Samsung Galaxy S is an incredible smartphone and proof that Samsung is currently making some of the best mobile technology on the planet. Launched with Android 2.1 (Eclair), it boasts a glorious 4.0-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels.
Yet, despite its generous screen size, the Galaxy S is only 9.9mm thick and weighs an unbelievably lightweight 119g. The 'wow' factor doesn't end there. It's powered by a speedy 1GHz processor, can pack up to 48GB of memory and Samsung claims 6.5 hours of talktime.

If there's a niggle here, it's with the 5.0 Megapixel camera. Yes, it supports autofocus, geo-tagging, face and smile detection plus HD video recording. But it lacks an LED flash, so you'll have trouble taking clear pictures when the light is low. Good to see that Samsung has fixed this oversight on the Galaxy Tab though, which boasts a giant 7-inch touchscreen...
The Motorola Droid X
This is a truly mammoth handset, a giant amongst smartphones and one of only a few that can dare call itself an 'iPhone-killer'. Running Android 2.1 (Eclair - upgradeable to Froyo 2.2), it impresses with a 4.3-inch LCD that has a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. Nice.
Like the Galaxy S, Motorola has managed to squeeze the latest technology into a chassis that's only 9.9mm thick. True, the Droid X weighs a little more (155g), but it definitely packs more in. The 8.0 MP camera, for example, features frills such as: autofocus, dual LED flash, mechanical shutter (1/1000 speed), image stablization, 16:9 image capture plus 720p HD video recording.
With a 1GHz processor, 40GB maximum memory and 8.0 hours of talktime, the Droid X strides across the mobile landscape like a colossus. It's a handset that's hard to beat for features and performance. How will the upgraded HTC Desire fare?
The HTC Desire HD
The HTC Desire HD is the new kid on the block, a bigger, smarter, beefier version of the original Desire and all the better for its new upgrades. Running Android 2.2 (Froyo) with HTC's slick Sense UI, it easily matches the Droid X's display with a 4.3-inch, 480 x 800 pixel touchscreen LCD of its own.
The Desire HD is a little fatter than its rivals here, measuring 11.8mm around its plastic waist. It's also the heaviest of the three phones, weighing a pocket-bulging 164g. You'll definitely notice that you're carrying it around.
But look at the technology that HTC has crammed in here - an 8.0 MP camera (with dual LED flash and HD video recording), a 1GHz processor and 33GB-worth of maximum memory. Battery life? A meaty 9.0 hours of talktime. Desirable? You bet.
So who wins this three-way techno-showdown? It's certainly close, but the overall specification of the Motorola Droid X just nabs the prize.
