The Complete Surround Sound Speaker Placement Guide

The main purpose of a set of surround sound speakers is to envelop the listener - this is where the 'surround' part comes from. Just like a movie theater, where if a shot is fired from behind the character on-screen, you hear the sound coming from behind you, with a set of quality speakers, you can replicate the same experience. But before you can do that, you have to learn how to place the speakers properly. This guide to surround sound speaker placement will help you do just that.

A multi-channel surround sound speaker system is intended to provide life-like, realistic sound rendition for true immersion. The amount of effort you put into placing the speakers properly will pay off when you find yourself getting completely immersed in a piece of music or a movie.

Most multi-channel surround sound speaker systems have at least 5 speakers - one right in the center, one to the left, one to the right, and two surround speakers that fulfill the role of 'enveloping' the listener around a wall of sound. A central sub-woofer or LFE completes the arrangement. Since there are five speakers and one sub-woofer, this is called the 5.1 setup. Some systems may have up to seven speakers - called the 7.1 speaker system.

The surround sound speaker placement influences the level of immersion immensely. Let's take a look at the different components of a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system and see how they ought to be placed:

1. Central Speaker
The central channel speaker fulfills the role of playing the 'anchor'. It imparts a spatial root to all the dialogs and sounds coming from the screen. Thus, you have little choice in placing this speaker; it must always be placed directly below or above the TV screen. If you're using a projection screen, you can place the central speaker some 6 to 12 inches behind the screen itself, though this is possible only if the screen is made from acoustically transparent material (i.e. the screen has perforations that allow the sound to pass through).

Since you should ideally place the central speaker above or below the TV screen, you have to make sure that the speakers are magnetically shielded to avoid interference (only for CRT TVs though). Of course, if you have a LCD/LED/Plasma TV, you need not worry about this feature.

For optimum audio quality, try to place the central speaker in line with your ear. It should also directly face the listener.

2. Front Left, Front Right Speakers
These two speakers make up the base 'trio' of any surround sound speaker system, along with the central speaker. I call these the 'base' because a bulk of the frequencies are carried by them; the other speakers serve the purpose of enhancing clarity, volume and fidelity. Get the placement of these speakers right, and your surround sound speaker system placement is largely taken care of.

Ideally, the left, right and central speakers must be placed along an arc facing the listener, though you may have to subvert this rule for a larger audience. Both the left and right speakers must be at least 6 feet apart and should be equidistant from the TV screen. They should also be equidistant from the listening area. These speakers must ideally make an angle of 45 to 60 degrees from the listener - the latter angle preferred for listening to music as opposed to watching movies.

3. Surround Speakers
These additional speakers, which may number between 2 to 4 depending on your setup (5.1 or 7.1) fulfill the role of enveloping the listener around a wall of sound. They combine with the front, left and right speakers to pull you directly into the listening experience.

The rules for placing the surround speakers are not set in stone. You should set them up according to your own preferences. Nevertheless, there are certain rules that you should follow:

- These speakers perform the best when placed slightly behind the listener. A foot or so to the rear of the listern's seating position works best.
- For best performance, try to place their height at least 2-3 feet higher than your position when seated. This will help to create a cloud of sound. You will need to use appropriate stands to achieve this position.
- If you have 6.1 or 7.1 surround sound speakers, you can place the remaining speakers directly behind the listener, preferably mounted on the back wall. If mounting on the back wall is not possible, use appropriate stands.

Experiment with the position of these speakers to achieve optimum sound that you are comfortable with. Try not to place them too far to the back. Neither should they be placed near the ear (the height should be at least 2-3 feet above the ear level). You want them to complement the main three speakers, instead of overpowering them.

4. Subwoofer Placement
The subwoofer is very easy to set up. This is because it deals with low-frequency sounds (i.e. the bass), and these sounds are non-directional. It doesn't matter where you place the subwoofer. Nevertheless, for best performance, place the subwoofer close to a wall or solid surface. This amplifies the bass and makes the sound richer, deeper.

Surround sound speaker placement depends on a lot of factors - the size of your room, the number of speakers, construction material used in the room (wooden surfaces are ideal for sound reflection and amplification). Experiment with different positions until you arrive at something that you are comfortable with. The tips and rules given in this guide aren't set in stone; you can play around with them to get to a setting that suits your room.
